Operating principle
Static frequency converters are used to feed loads that require AC power at a fixed frequency different from what is available from the grid. Using an intermediate DC transformation, the device can deliver that power under the required conditions.
Subsequently, one unit consists of 2 sub-subsystems:
Rectifier: Converts incoming AC voltage to DC
Inverter: Converts DC voltage to AC at the output at the required frequency
Sharp Output Frequency and Voltage Stability
The sophisticated control algorithms that static frequency converters are equipped with help maintain the output frequency and voltage with highly tight tolerances. These are usually better than +/- 1% for voltage and +/- 0.01% for frequency.
High Input Power Factor
Usually, modern static frequency converters also have rectifier circuits that correct the input power factor to a near-unity value. A high-power factor refers to drawing less reactive power from the grid. The result is lower utility charges and reduced load on the company’s electrical infrastructure.
Better Dynamic Response
Static converters also have an electronic control system that enables almost instantaneous responses to sudden load changes. Thus, the system can recover the output voltage and frequency within just milliseconds. Accordingly, the connected industrial load encounters minimal disruption – a factor crucial for processes that demand continuity.
