There are two main types of dry-type transformers: cast resin transformer (CRT) and vacuum pressure impregnated transformer (VPI).
CRT Transformers: windings are encapsulated in epoxy resin under vacuum, offering excellent protection against moisture, dust, and corrosive atmospheres. Ideal for harsh environments.
VPI Transformers: windings are impregnated under vacuum and pressure, then oven-cured. They are more flexible in design and cost-effective for standard industrial applications.
Voltage transformers typically have two windings: primary winding and secondary winding.
The primary winding is the winding of a transformer that is connected to and receives energy from an external source. The secondary winding is the winding of a transformer that delivers the transformed energy / changed voltage to the load.
Power transformer windings wrap around the core, which acts as the electric transformer's magnetic circuit. The core is critical to the electrical transformer because it enables electromagnetic induction between the primary and secondary windings.
Copper or aluminium conductors can be used to make transformer windings. Aluminium is lighter than copper but has 50% lesser conductivity than copper. It is cheaper than copper. On the other hand, copper has very good mechanical strength and is twice the conductivity of aluminium. Regardless of whether the windings are made from copper or aluminum, the function of these windings remains the same.
For safety, do not perform any maintenance tasks when the ac transformer has energy flowing through it. Look for adequate ventilation around the transformer. Remove anything in the area that impedes airflow. Look for dust or dirt accumulation on the surfaces of the volt transformer. You will need to clean these off after de-energizing the unit. However, the presence of dust indicates that the transformer is in a dusty area that will require inspections every three to six months. If you have the transformer in a dry, clean space, you may only need annual maintenance checks.
