1. What is Autotransformer?

In an autotransformer, the primary and secondary share a common winding. The secondary voltage always has a common terminal with the primary. Step-up or step-down of the voltage is achieved by a tap from the winding measuring from the common end.

2. Advantages and Disadvantages of Auto Transformer?

Advantages:

Cheap and more efficient.

Less leakage inductance between primary and secondary, thus less losses.

Simple construction to the OEM.

Smaller footprint for same VA rating.

Disadvantages:

No galvanic isolation. This is because windings are shared, faults and transients may couple from supply to load; autotransformers must not be used where protective separation is required.

As the primary and secondary share a common end, if the neutral side of the primary voltage is not grounded, the secondary side will not be either.

A failure of the winding insulation of the autotransformer will result in full input voltage applied to the output.

3. Applications of Auto-transformer

Used as a starter to give up to 50 to 60% of full voltage to the starter of a squirrel cage induction motor during starting up.

Used to give a small boost to a distribution cable, to correct the voltage drop.

Used as a voltage regulator.

Used in power transmission and distribution systems, audio system and railways simply to act as a voltage changer.

4. What is an Isolation Transformer?

Transformers with primary (input) and secondary (output) windings separated from each other are known as isolation transformers or insulating transformers. Under this construction, the input power and the output power are electrically separated by a dielectric insulation barrier, hence, providing a galvanic isolation.
