Ships are constructed using the utility power available at the shipyard in the country of construction. However, due to past governmental decisions, the utility frequency in one country is not the same as the utility frequency in another. Although transformers can be used to match voltage, the frequency change, usually 50 Hz to 60 Hz OR 60 Hz to 50 Hz, can only be done using a piece of equipment known as a frequency converter. The most efficient type is solid state. Essentially this equipment operates on the available in-country utility power and converts that to the utility power required by the ship.

What is Shore Power?
Shore power, also known as cold ironing or alternative marine power, is the process of supplying electrical power from the shore to a ship while it is docked, allowing the ship's auxiliary engines to be turned off and the burning of diesel fuel to stop.
Why Ports Should Get Shore Power Supply?
Gone are the days when ports competed only on price and location. Today, environmentally conscious shipping companies and cargo owners are increasingly looking for eco-friendly partners. This is where shore power shines, transforming your port into a sustainability champion and attracting valuable business.
Think green, think growth: by implementing shore power, your port is taking decisive action on environmental responsibility. Ships can ditch polluting diesel engines and connect to your clean shore power, reducing air and noise pollution in the port and surrounding communities. Generally, ships at berth often rely on auxiliary engines for onboard power, generating harmful air emissions like Nitrogen Oxides (Nox), Sulfur Oxides (Sox), and particulate matter.
Shore power allows them to shut down these engines, significantly reducing air and noise pollution near the port and surrounding communities. Studies have shown reductions of up to 95% in air pollutants compared to running auxiliary engines. This commitment to clean operations resonates well with environmentally conscious businesses and makes them more likely to choose your port for their cargo needs.
How to Convert Shore Power to Vessels?
The solution is shore power converter. Since most ships operate with 60 Hz electricity whereas local grid in most parts of the world is 50 Hz, Noyark shore power frequency converters help to adjust the grid electricity to the appropriate ship frequency and are a viable solution in replacing vintage rotating frequency converters (motor/generator set).
